Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ commemorates the presentation of Jesus at the Temple. It is based upon the account of the presentation of Jesus in Luke 2:22–40.
It falls on February 2 (today), which is the conclusion of the Christmas–Epiphany season.
While it is customary for Christians in some countries to remove their Christmas decorations on Twelfth Night, others remove them after Candlemas.
On Candlemas, candles are often carried in procession and serve as a symbol of Jesus Christ--the Light of the World.
At St. John's we were unable to present a pageant on Christmas Eve (as has been our custom of late) due to the pandemic restrictions. So, rather than having a pageant at the beginning of the Christmas-Epiphany season, we are having our pageant at the end of the season--
on Candlemas.
